Our grandfather truly was in love with wood. Growing up we were surrounded by his artwork throughout our home - wood inlays, sculptures, paintings, and of course all of the owls - big owls, small owls, owl families, so many owls.
His journey from the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, in Transylvania, to Columbus where he settled is a long, sad and yet triumphant story. In Columbus he became a member of the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons, a group still active to this day. He worked at the Josephinium Church Furniture Company for 8 years until he could afford to be a full time artist. In future posts, we will provide more information on his background. But for now, we just wanted to share our grandfather with the world, and it was time to finally make a website for him. Love, the 4 Ms

AuthorMartin Tischler was our grandfather. He was an amazing artist from the "old country." He was born in Transylvania in 1911, lost his father to cancer in 1924, fled to Austria during WWII and became a "DP", a displaced person. He arrived in the USA on September 11, 1949, settling in Columbus, Ohio. He lived and worked there until his death in 1987. ArchivesCategories |
